The days are going by quickly now. I feel as though the end is near. Maybe that is how we feel as we come to the twilight of our lives. I remember many things, looking back on what I would call my life of ups and downs. But as I sit here tonight watching drops of rain roll down a cracked windowpane, I can’t help but think of you Emmy, my darling wife, and our last moments together. The doctor gave us no hope and you wanted to just go home. You told me you wanted to spend your last days with little A.J. and me.
Those last days were the hardest days of my life darling Emmy. But, I hope you know that I did my best. Your bed was always fresh and clean and I made sure you wore your white cotton gown that you loved so much. How beautiful you looked with your long black curls flowing over the white pillowcase. Watching you dwindle away broke my heart. There was nothing I could do but keep you comfortable and hold you near. If you remember, that was your wish, to die in my arms.
Your green eyes shone with love for little A.J. and me, until you softly closed them with your last breath. You went peacefully, my love. Even in death you were beautiful. Precious Emmy, I held you gently as tears flowed from my eyes. I felt your precious young life ebb away from this world into the next. And Emmy darling, I held you long after you were gone
Nothing in my long life ever compared to this moment in time. Now as I near the end of my journey, I long to embrace you once more, this time forever.
